Bulgarian government plans to close more than 600 casinos

The head of the Budget Committee, Menda Stoyanova, unexpectedly supported a bill to restrict gambling in the country. She commented on this decision to the Flagship publication: “this is a consistent step by Valery Simeonov to restrict gambling in order to prevent ludomania among young people. I think we should even use the experience of those countries that have already introduced such restrictions.”

However, the chair of the Budget Committee confirmed that the bill will lead to “certain losses” in the country’s budget. The amount of losses should be clarified by the expert group in the near future.

The new bill provides that land-based casinos can operate:

in five-star hotels;
in the resort complexes;
within a radius of no more than 30 kilometers from railway, river, sea, and road checkpoints.
All other establishments must close no later than December 31, 2025. According to experts, more than 600 gaming establishments will be closed, and 30,000 people will lose their jobs.

Bulgaria has quarterly taxes. The organizers pay 255 euros to the Treasury for each slot machine and 11,200 euros for the game table. Since 2010, gambling establishments have added more than 50 million euros to the Bulgarian budget annually.

Casinos in Detroit will open without poker rooms

On Monday, regulators of the state of Michigan has issued recommendations on resumption of land-based casinos. According to this document, the organizers of gambling games must keep the poker rooms closed.

A report from the Detroit Free Press States that gambling establishments will operate at 15% of their capacity. Non-contact temperature checks will be carried out at the entrance to the establishments, and visitors will be required to wear masks and observe a social distance. Casinos will temporarily cancel Smoking in halls, self-service buffets and cloakrooms, and Valet services.

In an interview with the Free Press, Richard Kalm, Executive Director of the Michigan Gaming Board, commented on the recommendations: “In drafting these requirements, we considered the recommendations of the CDC, the Nevada Gaming Board, and information from the National Indian Gaming Commission. We have demanded that the casino offer plans to reopen, and we have consulted with the unions about the recommendations.”

Detroit is home to the MGM Grand Detroit casino, MotorCity Casino, and Greektown Casino. The rest of the state’s gambling establishments are tribal entities and are not subject to local laws. Some of them have already reopened.

Across the country, gambling establishments are reopening, with some Las Vegas casinos opening last Thursday. However, the policy regarding poker rooms varies by state. In Florida, many poker rooms opened in late may with short games, but some rooms are already switching to a nine-hand game.

In mid-March, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed an Executive order that forced the casino to close. The opening date is still unknown.
