Almost everyone has happened to impulsivly acquire an essential oil, attracted by the scent or information about his miraculous effect. After a brief interest we usually forget it somewhere, because our life has no established tradition in the use of essential oils. In fact we have no real idea about the possibilities and the forces that hide in the tiny bottle. Respect for essential oils is a bit obscure and has some sort of a mysterious element – a mystery that we do not understand …
We will discover some of the applications, challenges and benefits that we can have from essential oils.
First we need to understand that essential oils are highly concentrated pure plant extracts. They are dissolved in 4 processes: distillation, solvent extraction (prepared concrete, extract or "absolutes" – a clear oil) by sinks – (the result is called ointment) and mechanical pressing (refer mostly to rich citrus essential oils). The resulting oils are volatile, so it is sold in small bottles – a few drops are sufficient for most purposes. One of the benefits of essential oils is their wonderful scent, but most also have therapeutic and medicinal properties.
Storing essential oils:
Essential oils are volatile. To be preserved they must be kept in dark bottles in a cool and dry place. Properly stored, the oils can withstand several years without spoiling (except citrus oils that have 6-12m. Expiry date). If for some time the oil is exposed to light and heat, they begin to oxidize and lose their beneficial properties.
It should be known that pure oils can irritate the skin, so it has to be kept out of reach of children and pets.
10 ways to use essential oils:
Aromatic bath. The easiest way to make use of essential oils is to add 5-10 drops to a bath. The result is a great scented and relaxed experience. Oils of chamomile oil and lavender are good for relaxation and stress relief.
Body scrub. A great way to eliminate dry rough skin during winter is home body scrub made from 2 cups brown sugar or sea salt, a cup of almond oil, grapeseed oil and 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil. As a result, the skin becomes soft and tender.
House cleaning. Many essential oils have anti-bacterial, anti – fungal, and antiviral properties. they can be added to detergents and reinforce their effect and to have specific flavor. Of course, factory cleaners contain chemicals that are often not compatible with essential oils. Ideally you can prepare a household cleaner. Household cleaners would be of great benefit and relief to people who suffer from allergies to certain chemicals.
Moisturizer: It’s always fun for a person to experiment and make his own beauty products as mixtures in a variety of ingredients suitable for his skin type. The result could even smell delicious, why not. Body moisturizers can be made in a spray by mixing in a vial of distilled water, carrier oil and a few drops of your preferred essential oil. Thus creating a light texture perfectly moisturizing the skin after bathing.
Lotion facial cleansing. Essential oils have astringent, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and are ideal ingredients for a cleansing milk. They could be added to homemade facial toner (organic liquid soap, chamomile tea and carrier oil –this is a tested recipe, which we can offer in one of our next posts).
Massage oil. To make massage oil we need a little base oil such as grapeseed oil or sweet almond. For aromatic massage its sufficient to add around 40-60 drops of your favorite essential oil added to 120ml of base oil.
Oral Hygiene. Just a few drops in your toothpaste or mouthwash can do wonders!
It should be borne in mind that many of the essential oils that are offered are not all pure! To reduce the cost, essential oils are sometimes blended with lower-quality products.
