Never Say Never! Are You Too Old To Start An Online Business?

Starting an online business is something that seems to be very much a young person’s game. If you don’t believe me then just check out a magazine like Wired; every month it seems the mag features another young genius who has some tech start-up to his name, and every month it seems the faces on the front get younger and the younger. It’s no surprise of course- the internet is a young person’s domain and having grown up with technology and computers no one has a better understanding of how these things work than the current 20-30 year olds.

Except that’s not entirely true, and certainly not if you look at the facts. While the magazines may seem to have a ‘thing’ for these young billionaires, it seems that the groups making the most money on their own are actually older. The web and entrepreneurialism is not in fact a young person’s game at all – oldies are taking the internet back.

The Stats

Let’s look at the stats. Only a paltry 0.8% of 18-24 year olds in America run their own business, while this goes up only slightly to 4.9% for older 25-34 year olds. The next generation fair a little better with 12.8% of 45-54 year olds classing themselves as treps, but the real winners are the 55-64 year olds, 15.4% of whom are running their own companies. As if that wasn’t enough, the number of young entrepreneurs is rapidly falling with 9% fewer people under 25 currently owning their own business compared with 2001.

Why Old People Have Still Got It

So you may class yourself as a dinosaur, but the reality is that there’s probably a lot more fight in you yet. And in fact there are many ways in which older entrepreneurs have the advantage. For one you’ll be far more likely to understand business, and you will probably have a lot more idea of how a business works and what it entails. Your experience will also help to instil more confidence in your potential clients/your site’s visitors and you will find that you have the advantage of more connections and of more resources.

Sure, you may feel a little behind when it comes to the very latest technology, but this is nothing that can’t easily be fixed. There are plenty of lessons and classes available for you to expand your knowledge for instance, and there are plenty of great books and resources accessible for anyone who wants to expand that knowledge further. More to the point, just getting stuck in and learning the hard way is enough for most people to get a full understand of how to make the most of various technologies.

Another option of course that’s available to most older people looking to earn their living online is simply to outsource. Whether it’s SEO services, web design or marketing, most of the bits you don’t understand can easily be outsourced allowing you to focus on what really matters to your business. With age comes wisdom, and one example of this wisdom is knowing when to delegate…
